Nobel laureate Tutu was a light in the dark
The funerals of Archbishop of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu have been held. South African anti-apartheid leader Cyril Ramaphosa was burned at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town yesterday. There were family members and South Africans.
Desmond Tutu died December 26 at the age of 90. South Africans mourn his death for seven days. However, cardiovascular diseases have increased the number of visitors to state events in St. Petersburg. George's Cathedral was limited. He was later buried there.At the time, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Tutu was a world-class leader with a high moral character. He has served the people all his life.
In a prerecorded message, Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury in the United Kingdom stated that when the people of the land were in darkness, he was in darkness. It focuses on the fight against fear, conflict, oppression and violence around the world.
Tutu's wife, Nomalijo Leh, was attending a funeral in a wheelchair. He arrived wearing a purple scarf. Tutu's religious activities were purple. Cyril Ramaphosa also came to the event wearing a purple tie. Nantambi Naomi Tutu, Tutu's daughter, was present.
Outside the cathedral there was a large painting of Tutu. For the past two days, people from all walks of life have been remembering Tutu by lighting flowers and candles. Tutu's body was buried on Thursday and Friday.
Hundreds of people watched Tutu's funeral live on the big screen in front of City Hall in Cape Town. Uncle Phila Tutu, 54, came to pay his respects. The woman said, "Ttu has taught us love, unity and respect for each other. So today we came to pay our last respects to her."
Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Clarkdorp, known as the gold mining town. Her father was a teacher in Jakara and her mother Alta was a stay-at-home mom. He followed in his father's footsteps and chose teaching as his career. But he stopped teaching in opposition to the government's ban on black children in schools.
Tutu Bishop Trevor Hadleston and other white clergy opposed to apartheid were impressed. He was ordained a pastor in 1961. Tutu was elected the first black Anglican priest in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1975.
Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in the fight against racism.
Tutu was one of the most famous people in the country and abroad. Tutu lived during the time of Nelson Mandela, the undisputed leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.
While Mandela was in prison, Tutu and his colleagues led his party. He later served as head of the anti-apartheid movement that established South Africa.
